Hello everyone, this is Rani Hoover. I do not know where to start the story. Rani has the biggest heart, a great cook, make an awesome fireplace, drive a black jeep, wears leather boots and plans lovely weddings. We meet each other for the first time and she brought me lunch, Crabs!! I had the pleasure of meeting Rani’s friend who are all super cool, wine makers and photographers. Thank you Rani for all the warmth, knowledge, food and the awesome tour of the Valley.

SAN FRANCISCO INDIE TRAVEL GUIDE

Posted by on

After driving for 8 hours from LA, I arrived at 10pm, absolutely tired in San Francisco. The city greeted me with a shock, the traffic! Coming from the LA, I have already encountered the long waits on the highway but SF is a different monster. Downtown SF is filled with one-way streets, narrow lanes, roads that force you to turn and interesting assortment of public transportation that storm the road. I can’t wait to get out of my car.

San Francisco is truly a unique city. The public transportation systems are made really well with buses that run everywhere in the city. The true beauty of the city is really the creative energy that surrounds it. Many unique cafes, shops, urban spaces can be found just walking around the area. Despite the popular believe that this city is really expensive, I beg to differ. It is probably a expensive city to live because of it’s expensive rent but traveling is actually cheaper if you know where to go.

1) Miette

I knew about Miette all the way in Singapore because of their pastry book in Kinokuniya. Arriving at their store is definitely a pleasant surprise when everything in the book has come alive. This is definitely one of the new-school bakery that holds the essence of good pastry. It is obvious they are trying hard to find new ways to excite your taste buds and their visual aesthetics are also impressive.

2) Get a street Poem

The perfect take home memory for San Francisco. Try to spot this poet in Hayes street, let fate bring you to this amazing poet.

3) King of Thai Noodles

This is probably the cheapest place in the city to get good food and beer. I was a little skeptic when I ordered the plate of Pad Thai. However, it turned out good, not the authentic street stall Pad Thai you can find in Bangkok but slightly tweaked to the Americian tastebud. Beers are $2 all day and all noodles are $6.50! Definitely a must-go.

4) Have a Street Dog

Your San Francisco experience cannot be completed without a street dog. Walk yourself the Mission district and get a $3 sausage wrapped in bacon and served with brown onions  and jalapeños.

SOULFUL MUSIC COLLABORATION

Posted by on

Music is one of those thing in life that will wake me up in the middle of the night and be totally consumed by it. I met Krsytal on a friend’s birthday party. After I beatbox, she came up and suggested a collaboration. Without thinking twice, I agreed. Here the cover of Jailer by  Asa. Krsytal has amazing jazz voice.

INDIE GUIDE TO EAST BAY

Posted by on

After traveling to San Francisco, It has come to my attention that there are cool indie neighborhoods that are tuck under the blankets. So, I drove my car over the bridge and arrived into a city with old well-maintained theaters, lakes and breathtaking sceneries. The city greeted me with spaces, ice-creams and awesome thrift finds. This is the East bay, made of Oakland, Berkeley University and a few small cities. The first thing I noticed in the city is that “the city smelled high”, however you want to interpret that. Contrary to that, every street light is equipped with speed camera which kinda reminded me of the crazy Singapore. The locals here said that “this is the way of how the city make money, it’s just much easier to send a bill than to arrest someone on the streets”. I laughed.

Thank Rebakah Mcnall, A & B Creative for showing me around your great city. I can’t wait to see the creation for the Lab event!

1) Fenton’s Creamy

This ice-cream place has been opened for more than a century! The Sundae there are enormous, topped with the traditional whipped cream and cherry. When you dig deeper, you are in for a delicious surprise. We made a great choice by sharing a Sundae. Personally, I don’t like it that they have new decor. I want to go back to the era of B&W photos that hangs on their wall now, of kids having a huge smile across his face eating that delicious ice-cream.

2) Blue Bottle Coffee

I’m not a crazy fan of coffee but this is definitely a neat little store. The cafe is a small square room compared to the huge warehouse that roast their coffee beans next to it. There is also a tasting room for speciality coffee, go check it out when you are there.

3) Kaiser Centre Mall

In the middle of downtown Oakland with all the craziness happening around, a hidden garden was create to let employees relax and enjoy the sun during the lunch break. Kaiser Centre Mall looks like just another bank but inside, you can find old B&W photos of old Oakland and this hidden retreat.

2013 NEW YEAR RESOLUTION

Posted by on

I am really proud of myself because I was able stick my plans and achieved most of the goals I set for myself. I spent 2 year in the army and worked side jobs to save up some money to afford my one year trip. I also have happily finished 2 years of National Service and learned so much from it. I really wanted to thank my bosses, LTC James Teo and 2WO Lim Ser Wei. Although I injured my back during service, I managed to swim and run to build up my strength for this trip. I pass my driving test after the second try in the nick of time before coming for this trip. I am truly thankful for that otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to own a car and drive around here in the USA. I finally got the blog together without spending too much. Thanks again for those to helped me so much with the blog. Lastly, I managed to successfully convinced my family for this trip. Haha. For more tips, read my post here.

On 16th Jan. I am flying to Mexico and will travel around Latin America. I have also made some resolution and plans for this year!

1) Be better at doodling

I have always admired people who could just sketch on the go and it just magically turned out pretty. After I get down to Mexico, I will be sketching. At least 4 sketches a week. If some are decent enough, I will post them up here!

2) Better Handwriting

It is not that I write like crap but I really do. This is one of the skills I regretted not learning when I’m young. My mum has always reminded me to write better and taught me but I just refused to learn. Technology completely allows me to ignore writing. Now that I am writing postcards to people, I’ve started to realize how bad my handwriting is. I will be buying one of those exercise books and will start practicing. My postcards recipients: “Please bear with me and give me your feedback”.

3) Salsa

I have started learning Salsa before the trip but I am at the ‘3 moves levels’ – I only have 3 moves on the dance floor. This is way too disgracing for me. I will be spending at least a month to fully immerse myself in salsa, going to dance school, practicing and be decent at it. I am already excited as I write about this. I will come back as a salsa dancer. Ir a bailar, niña bonita!
